China’s ambassador to South Korea, Dai Bing, on Saturday promoted performances of Huangmei opera, a traditional Chinese art form, in South Korea and urged South Koreans to attend.
In a post on X, Dai said a delegation from the Anqing Huangmei Opera Art Theater in China’s Anhui province will perform Oct. 25 and 28 at the Western Cultural Center theater in Gimhae and the Lifelong Learning Center theater in Yongin.
The troupe will present excerpts from traditional works, including “The Female Prince Consort,” “Lantern Festival Fun” and “Chunhyang,” in short-play form, according to the post. “Chunhyang” shares its title with a classic Korean tale.
Dai described Huangmei opera as originating from tea-picking folk songs and said its melodies are soft and lively. He said it is one of the five major traditional opera genres in China.
“I welcome our Korean friends to attend the performances and personally experience the unique charm of Chinese culture in Huangmei opera,” he wrote.
